How to Help Seniors Improve Their Quality of Life

Quality of life is essential for health and well-being, and it becomes our top concern as our loved ones begin to age. Having a positive outlook in life can help seniors enjoy and relish their retirement years and beyond.

Here are 7 ways to help our seniors improve their quality of life.

1. Address the Cause of Depression.

According to a survey millions of people over the age of 65 are affected by depression (loneliness and isolation) because of retirement, loss of a spouse, sickness, medication side effects, or inability to live independently in their own home. To improve the senior’s quality of life, it is necessary to address the cause of depression, determine its symptoms and seek the help of health professionals.

2. Allow them to see their grandchildren regularly.

According to studies, older adults with grandchildren are more likely to stay happy and active in their senior years. Fun activities with their grandkids are something our seniors will surely cherish for the rest of their lives — memories with grandchildren are truly priceless and amazing. 3. Encourage them to keep a journal.

According to studies, many people, including seniors consider journaling as a mental health tool to recover or avoid mental health issues like stress, anxiety and depression.  Journaling provides you an opportunity to clearly define thoughts or feelings you may not really understand. By putting your thoughts and feelings into writing, you can have more clarity and make necessary changes that will benefit your life. Thus keeping a grandmother’s journal is a great booster to your grandmother’s mental health.

4. Encourage social activities.

Loneliness and isolation are common problems among seniors, especially if they are not capable to drive or have mobility issues. These older adults are at a greater risk for dementia and even have shorter life spans. Thus, help your older adults to be socially active— plan family visits or outings for your elderly parents during holidays and special occasions like birthdays or weddings. Or you can even travel together to visit friends and relatives which can be an awesome way to experience fun and social interactions.

5. Help them feel valued and appreciated.

Everyone wants to feel valued and appreciated, most especially the seniors. So make your seniors feel that you still need their help and advice. Recognizing your elderly loved one’s vast experience by seeking their opinion or advice can boost their confidence and worth. Think of the advice you may need such as raising your own kids, financial budgeting, cooking, decorating your home, etc.  Don’t hesitate to solicit their advice during your visit to them in a senior living community.

6. Help them to be physically fit.

Try to encourage them to some regular physical activities like walking, gardening, dancing, biking or swimming to stimulate blood flow, build stamina, reduce stress and anxiety, promote heart health and help improve the quality of sleep.

7. Encourage them to learn and use technology.

According to a survey, 81 percent of the seniors consider technology as an important tool to stay connected with their friends and family. Surprise them with connecting devices such as tablet, smartphone or a laptop and teach them to navigate email, Facebook, and Google. Also medical alert device, home alert system and medication dispensing device are technological devices for seniors to help them live independently at home.
